Professional Weather Instruments & Equipment

Because weather influences our lives so greatly, it has become necessary to predict it accurately. During the last century weather prediction grew from little more than an art into a well-recognized discipline within the now-robust science of meteorology (the study of the atmosphere, its components and its behavior). Prediction, by its very nature, is less than perfect; however, the quality of weather prediction has advanced steadily over the last 30 years.

Numerical models, satellite imagery, doppler radar and other state-of-the-art technologies have revolutionized the field of meteorology. Of key importance to accurate weather prediction is detailed and accurate weather observation. The revolution in digital circuitry has recently spawned an entire new generation of sophisticated professional weather equipment. Professional weather instruments and weather equipment ranging from thermometers to satellites are essential to the tasks of both theoretical meteorologists and weather forecasters if they are to properly perform their roles as protectors of the public interest.
